Abstract

School-related Gender-based Violence (SRGBV) is a subgroup of gender-based violence (GBV) specific to secondary and primary school settings. SRGBV is a daunting reality, a crime against humanity, and therefore a human rights issue. Responsive SRGBV programmes imply dynamic programme content and structure that is determined by the needs of communities and learners. Promoting safe community models should accommodate adequate flexibility if the Department of Basic Education (DBE) wants to remain relevant in supporting communities into becoming safe spaces for all. Traditionally, the profession of occupational therapy has not been involved in addressing SRGBV in South Africa. This opinion paper calls for school-based occupational therapists to become activists promoting justice and become leaders in SRGBV prevention and intervention for victims of SRGBV. It elaborates on the context within which school-based occupational therapists can develop intervention programmes that address SRGBV in schools, and provides recommendations for action.
